The Short Answer
Most smart thermostats need continuous 24 V power, which older homes often do not have because the wiring has no C (common) wire. You have two ways round it: buy a thermostat designed to run without one, or buy one that ships with an adapter that creates one.
| Thermostat | Without a C wire? | What the manufacturer says |
|---|---|---|
| Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) Check price › | Yes, in most homes | “Designed to work whether or not your home has a common (‘C’) wire”; under 1% need a C wire or Power Connector |
| Google Nest Thermostat Check price › | Yes, in most homes | Designed to work without a C wire; exceptions include heat-only or cool-only systems and zone controllers |
| Sensi Lite (ST25) Check price › | Yes, on most systems | Needs a C wire only for heat-only, cool-only and heat pump systems; runs on two AAA batteries |
| ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium Check price › | Yes, with the included kit | Power Extender Kit is in the box |

First, Check: Do You Really Not Have One?
Take the thermostat off the wall with the power off. If there is a wire on a terminal marked C, you have one. If not, look in the wall opening: a coiled, unused conductor (often blue or black) tucked behind the old thermostat can be connected as a C wire at both ends. That is free and beats any adapter.
If there is genuinely no spare, pick from the list below. Our C-wire guide explains the checks in more detail.
Only Two Wires? Heat-Only Systems and Apartments
Many older heat-only systems, such as boilers and some apartment furnaces, run just two thin wires to the thermostat: R and W. That is the hardest case, because most “no C wire” workarounds need at least a third wire:
- ecobee: ecobee says that with only two wires on R and W (or T and T) you will not be able to install an ecobee thermostat with the Power Extender Kit, because it needs a third wire.
- Google Nest Thermostat and Sensi Lite: both makers list heat-only systems as an exception that needs a C wire (sources below).
- Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen): Google says it is designed to work with or without a C wire, with under 1% of homes needing one. If yours shows low-power symptoms, Google’s Nest Power Connector works with 24 VAC systems and, on heat-only systems with no control board, installs where the thermostat wiring connects to the furnace.
Check the voltage first. Google says millivolt systems (common on gas wall and floor heaters) and high-voltage systems are not compatible with the Power Connector, and ecobee lists both as incompatible too. Thick wires marked 120 V or 240 V mean electric baseboard heat: see the best thermostats for baseboard heaters instead. In a rental or a building with central steam heat, ask the landlord before changing anything.

Google Nest Power Connector
For Nest thermostats on 24 VAC systems without a C wire, including heat-only systems; installs at the furnace, boiler or zone controller.
Check price on Amazon1. Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen): Best Overall
Google says the 4th gen is designed to work whether or not your home has a C wire, and that only in limited cases (under 1%) does it need a C wire or the Nest Power Connector. It has a rechargeable battery that it tops up from the heating and cooling wires. The Amazon listing below includes a Nest Temperature Sensor for a second room.
The catch: power-sharing has limits. Google lists “Delayed” messages, shorter battery life and Wi-Fi drops as signs a Nest is short of power, and notes that some systems, including heat pumps, require a C wire or a compatible power accessory.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)
Works without a C wire in most homes; includes a Nest Temperature Sensor.

The cheaper Nest is also designed to work if your home doesn’t have a C wire, with two AAA batteries as backup. Google’s exceptions are heat-only or cool-only systems and zone controllers, which need a C wire.

Google Nest Thermostat
Designed to work without a C wire in most homes; AAA battery backup.

Sensi says its Lite thermostat works without a c-wire on most systems, running on two AAA batteries. The exceptions are heat-only, cool-only and heat pump systems. Sensi says all its thermostats are ENERGY STAR certified, and the Lite works with Alexa.

Sensi Lite Smart Thermostat (ST25)
Battery-powered; no C wire needed except for heat-only, cool-only and heat pump systems.

The ecobee needs 24 V power, but the Premium ships with the Power Extender Kit, which installs at the furnace and lets the thermostat run over your existing wires. That makes it the most dependable no-C-wire option for a heat pump, where the Nest and Sensi both need a C wire or accessory anyway.
Don’t confuse it with the ecobee Essential: ecobee lists the Power Extender Kit as sold separately for that model.

ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium
Power Extender Kit and one SmartSensor included; strong heat pump controls.

- Amazon Smart Thermostat: listed as C-wire required; Amazon documents a C-wire adapter for homes without one.
- Honeywell Home T5: the manual lists 24 VAC (C wire) as required; an adapter is included only with some versions.
- ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential: C wire or the separately sold Power Extender Kit.
- Sensi Touch 2: Sensi says the Touch models always require a C wire.
Or Add a C Wire to What You Have
If you prefer a thermostat from the second list, a universal add-a-wire kit creates a C wire over a standard four-wire cable. It installs at the furnace and at the thermostat and involves the control board, so read the instructions before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which smart thermostats work without a C wire?
According to the manufacturers, the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), the Google Nest Thermostat and the Sensi Lite work without a C wire on most systems. The ecobee Premium needs one but includes the adapter in the box.
Is it bad to run a Nest without a C wire?
It works in most homes, but some systems cannot supply enough power that way. Google lists Delayed messages, shorter battery life and Wi-Fi drops as signs of low power; the Nest Power Connector or a C wire fixes it.
Do I need a C wire for a heat pump thermostat?
Often, yes. Google and Sensi both say heat pump systems need a C wire or a power accessory. The ecobee Premium solves this with its included Power Extender Kit.
Which smart thermostat works with only two wires for heat only?
The Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) is designed to work without a C wire in most homes, and Google’s Nest Power Connector covers heat-only 24 VAC systems if power runs short. ecobee says its Power Extender Kit cannot be used with only two wires, and Google and Sensi both list heat-only systems as needing a C wire for the Nest Thermostat and Sensi Lite.
Is there a Honeywell smart thermostat that works without a C wire?
Honeywell says the T9 ships with a C-wire adapter. The Honeywell X2S and T5 need a C wire, though some T5 versions include an adapter.
Can I use the G wire as a C wire?
Some installers repurpose the fan wire, but you then lose independent fan control, and it is not supported by every system. An adapter such as ecobee’s Power Extender Kit or an add-a-wire kit keeps the fan wire working.
