The Click Is Good News
A click when you change the setpoint means the thermostat has power, is reading the room, and has closed the circuit to call for heating or cooling. That rules out most of what people suspect first — dead batteries, a blown control fuse, a thermostat that has failed.

Two of these — the hum and the click-then-silence — are the common pair, and they are worth understanding because the parts involved are cheap and the diagnosis is not something you should attempt yourself.
Contactor or Capacitor? What Each One Looks Like
These are the two parts that most often produce “clicks but does not start”, and they fail differently.
A failing contactor is the switch that connects mains power to the compressor and fan. When it fails you get a distinct click on the call for cooling with no compressor or fan running afterwards, and its contacts often show visible pitting, burn marks or corrosion.
A failing capacitor is what gives the motor the kick it needs to start turning. When it fails, motors hum without turning, or start briefly and stop. The physical tell is a casing that is bulging, leaking or discoloured — the top swells as the dielectric inside breaks down.
You can safely look. Do not touch. With the power off at the disconnect, taking the panel off the outdoor unit and looking for a swollen capacitor or burnt contacts is a visual check that needs no tools. That is where a homeowner should stop.
Capacitors store a charge even with the power off, and have to be discharged safely before anyone handles them. Testing means a multimeter and knowing the discharge procedure. This is a genuine shock risk, not a formality — the part costs very little and the service call is what you are actually paying for.
What to Check Before You Call

- The outdoor unit’s own disconnect. There is usually a pull-out box on the wall beside it, separate from the breaker panel. People pull them for maintenance and forget.
- Both breakers. The indoor air handler and the outdoor unit are often on separate circuits, which is why the fan can run while the compressor does not.
- The furnace door. Its safety switch cuts everything when the panel is not seated.
- The condensate float switch. A full drain pan cuts the control circuit deliberately. Water around the air handler confirms it.
- Mode and setpoint. Obvious, but set it several degrees past the room temperature — a one-degree call may not be enough to start anything, and compressor protection can delay a start by several minutes.
